Published by Miss Comptoir COMPTOIR STROLL

Music is entering museums in both Paris and London! The musical comedies of Jacques Demy delight audiences at the Paris Cinémathèque, while David Bowie is rocking the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

The Enchanted World of Jacques Demy is yours to discover until August 4th at the Cinémathèque Française. You’ll find excerpts of films highlighted by photographs, paintings, drawings and sculptures which have been created by the director himself or by the artists who influenced him (Jean Cocteau, David Hockney, Alexander Calder, Raoul Dufy and Niki de Saint-Phalle).

And just how can you blend into the atmosphere in a fashionable way? By adopting the colorful pop spirit of the Jacques Demy exhibition in Paris. Become an updated “Mademoiselle Rochefort” with an ultra pink and white twist on a sixties-style dress.

2604Comptoir Decoration

Published by Miss Comptoir COMPTOIR STROLL

On your toes, everybody! Spring is here, and it’s time to think about interior decoration. (For all of us on the Comptoir team, it’s great way to brighten your mood!) As a matter of fact, today at lunch we were discussing knits, the latest decorating trend. We love them! Far from being reserved for winter use alone, wool is a noble material with an incredible ability to soften, confer tranquility and evoke simple, natural comfort.

We’ve noted that several designers and artists have decided to make wool and knits their preferred material for transforming interiors into soft, cozy cocoons!

Like Claire Anne O’Brien, for example: she’s a well-known textile artist who comes straight from Ireland (the country of sheep!). She juxtaposes knitted patterns to create furniture with natural, organic shapes. Her stools are irresistible! You can see all of Claire’s creations at www.claireanneobrien.com/home.

1503Three different ways of looking at fashion

Published by Miss Comptoir COMPTOIR STROLL

When exhibitions look back over history… The history of fashion through the models who have embodied it, the history of costume, a photographer’s eye view of the everyday life of the upper classes in the early 20th century... we can’t wait to see them! Here are three exhibitions currently taking place that highlight women’s fashion and beauty through the centuries through photographs, videos and original pieces.

Renée - Biarritz, August 1930

3011Comptoir loves Le Dictionnaire Impertinent de la Mode

Published by Miss Comptoir COMPTOIR STROLL

Two total fashion pros have joined forces to give us a work that is both funny and educational about fashion: Le Dictionnaire Impertinent de la Mode. They are Sylvie Barbier, the former editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan and Marie Claire, and Isabelle Oziol de Pignol, stylist, illustrator and blogger at Accro de la Mode (who incidentally has also drawn a few illustrations for Comptoir).

2211The Road to Bohemia…at Comptoir!

Published by Miss Comptoir COMPTOIR STROLL

The Bohemias exhibition, which is currently being shown at the Grand Palais in Paris until January14, is calling us! Bringing together fashion, artistic culture and history, it retraces the story and the emergence of Bohemia, from depictions of gypsies to the birth of the modern myth of the doomed artist, covering four centuries of Bohemian imagery.

This gives us an opportunity to present our interpretation of current Bohemia, with a “Boho chic” Comptoir look. This trend has been in fashion for several seasons and calls for a wide skirt and a loose top, because, as you will notice by having a look at the pictures, Bohemia is often careful to uncover its shoulders in a contemplative attitude which is very stylishly casual. And don’t forget the scarf tied around your hair!

1611Copenhagen: this winter’s city break!

Published by Miss Comptoir COMPTOIR STROLL

Winter has got to be the best season of the year to explore Denmark. Frozen landscapes, sleepy forests, icy lakes and colorful houses rub shoulders with castles worthy of a fairy tale. All of which provides the ideal backdrop to show off your winter wardrobe!

Don't be mistaken: despite their cold climate, the Danes are extremely fashion conscious, erring towards a style that is both minimalist and sophisticated. The look is best epitomized by what we have attempted to interpret as a style that mingles minimalism and hyggeligt (pronounced huggelit, meaning cozy, warm, comfortable and smart).

0208Swinging London

Published by Miss Comptoir COMPTOIR STROLL

You know that the Olympic Games kicked off in London on July 27! We’re now in for a fortnight of sport, striving and excelling oneself. A chance to discover certain disciplines (such as field hockey) that receive little media coverage and above all witness great sporting exploits.

It’s also the moment to discover or rediscover London over a weekend or for a longer vacation! Take the opportunity to visit historic monuments such as Westminster Abbey, Big Ben or Buckingham Palace, plan a shopping trip to the (many) vintage shops along Portobello Road or Brick Lane or get lost in Camden Market… There’s no shortage of ideas!

But just because we’re celebrating world sports doesn’t mean that you can walk around the streets of London in just your tracksuit ;). For a little made in London twist, here’s a look created with a Swinging London sixties feel – think of Mary Quant and Twiggy.

2606Pre-vacation: 3 destinations, 3 Comptoir looks!

Published by Miss Comptoir COMPTOIR STROLL

Here are three destinations for a pre-vacation long weekend as a romantic getaway or with friends, to relax in the calm and sunshine; a vacation before your vacation without the August crowds!

Let’s start with Santorin, that little paradisiacal crescent-shaped Greek island, with its little white villages and dazzling blue sea. Unfortunately, not everything has always been preserved from mass tourism and we advise you to avoid Oia for that reason. Instead, head in the direction of Finikia lower down, a really cute troglodyte village where you can stay in Heliophos, a place that is half-guesthouse, half-holiday home run by the welcoming Sofia. The rooms are tastefully and elegantly furnished in pure Greek tradition in seven former grottos that have been renovated and equipped with all modern comforts.

On the menu, a copious breakfast put together by Sofia, with Greek yoghurt, honey, jam and homemade cinnamon cakes (and a view over the sea!), village tours, the beach, drinks in the open air, and dinner in the surrounding restaurants. A real favorite!

3105Art-trotter

Published by Miss Comptoir COMPTOIR STROLL

With the fine weather on its way back, don’t you just feel like taking off (far, faraway..) ? We do! So, while you’re waiting for the beach or any other relaxing activity (= compulsory rest for your neurons), wake up the globetrotter in you and share your passion for art with it; just as well, because there’s lots of great exhibitions to visit everywhere in the world right now… dressed in Comptoir, of course! Three exhibitions, three cities, three looks.

First, let’s cross the channel to meet Yayoi Kusama in London, for a retrospective dedicated to him at the Tate Modern up to June 5th. You may not know his name, but you will surely recognize his work! His obsession for repeated patterns and namely dots is readily identifiable. The exhibition retraces his work, from some of his early pictorial experiences in his native Japan to his most contemporary pieces, and highlights key moments of his artistic life. You will discover an endearing and complex personality who played an important part in the post-war pop culture.

To pay tribute to the London style, as well as to Kusama, we adopt the proper but stylish preppy style of Alexa Chung, with a polka dot shirt and its Peter Pan collar, and a trench coat.
