We’ve got some new favourites this week!

We begin with La Grande Sophie, who in February released her 6th album, La Place du Fantôme. Thirty-eight minutes of pure joy during which she reveals herself with grace and modesty. The lyrics are introspective and offer a glimpse of the singer’s secret garden, which remains elusive. La Grande Sophie hides nothing of her sensitivity, vulnerability and brilliance. Contrary to appearances, the record has nothing sad about it. It is full of upbeat, sometimes dancy rhythms. Sophie’s voice is full and has a range we had seldom heard before. She deals out pop, folk, funk and even disco tracks, all the while unveiling her secret fears and deep-down pain. We’re going to be listening to La place du Fantôme for a good while yet! We particularly like Ne m’Oublie Pas and Quand On Parle de Toi.

This week, Moodzic features a couple of records that captured our hearts!
The first is Dark Night of the Soul by Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse. An ambitious project that aims to bring together the very best that indie pop and rock has to offer. It all started when producer Danger Mouse (from Gnarls Barkley) met songwriter Mark Linkous, aka Sparklehorse, who sadly passed away two years ago. They called upon David Lynch for the artwork, but also two of the songs (because he sings too!). The result is a startling album, whose tracks become classics as of the first listen. We lost ourselves in its atmospheric sounds and pop melodies carried by the voices of Suzanne Vega, Nina Perssons of the Cardigans and Julian Casablancas of the Strokes, to name just three. An uncompromising album made of pure genius!

Our two favorites of the week!

We’ll begin with Stuck in the Sound. After the extremely successful albums Nevermind the Living Dead (2006) and Shoegazing Kid (2008), they are coming back to us in better shape than ever with their new album Pursuit, celebrating ten years in the business (yes, already!). It contains skillfully crafted rock melodies and keeps the rock yet electric voice of José Reis Fontao (the singer). It’s impossible to resist their unrelenting rhythm, meticulous melodies and rebellious energy. What’s more, the Parisian indie rock group is currently considered to be one of the best live groups at the moment. And you are in luck because they just happen to be playing in Rennes today, Puteaux on March 31, Morlaix on April 6 as part of the Panorama festival, Lyons on April 11 and Marseilles on April 12!

In Moodzic this week, we bring you a trio of French bands who sing in English.

We begin with Duellum. This quintet of Frenchies met in the lecture theatres of Science Po University and were united by their love of music. They had only just started playing together in their garage when Arthur and Jonathan left for England. They came back with a new generation of indie rock in their bags, fuelled by the buzz of London’s bars. Their tunes are fresh, lively and guaranteed to get feet tapping. Their latest release is the 6-track EP For Some Reasons I Want To Talk.

Our musical finds of the week!

Foster the People:

This band from LA deliver catchy, accessible indie pop that makes you want to go “on the road” (get it?), aiming for the beaches of California. The perfect way to raise our winter mood with a little bit of sunshine. With their album Torches, a mishmash of alternative electro pop, they are already being touted as the next MGMT. They are currently on a world tour and you’ll be able to catch them at the Bataclan in early May… if you manage to get a ticket that is, because the gig is already sold out!!

Let’s begin Moodzic #27 with Ben Howard, currently our favourite British artist. His 1st album, Every Kingdom, released last October, is awash with delicate melodies and a neo-folk vibe that reminds us of the countryside, untouched nature, wet grass, clouds being blown across the sky, the fresh, cold air of the wilderness… Fitting that it should have been recorded in a barn in his native Devon!

He will be playing a gig at the Cigale on 30 January 2012. Don’t miss it! In the meantime, you can listen to his beautiful track Old Pine.

The latest issue of Moodzic focuses on French-speaking artists!

The first is Arthur H, who has blessed us with his latest album, Baba Love. Arthur H needs no introduction, but for those of you who have been on a desert island for the last 20 years he is the son of Jacques Higelin. During a highly eclectic and prolific career filled with highs and lows, moments of glory (Négresse Blanche and Adieu Tristesse, to mention just two), numerous tours, awards, great song writing, duos and famous cover versions, Arthur H has sung about love in all its forms in his wonderful husky voice. And when we say all its forms, that’s an understatement: electronic rhythms, pop-rock, soul, groove… but he never gets out of his depth. This may be an Arthur H album, but it also features an impressive array of collaborators, including his half-sister Izia, Joseph Chedid, rapper Saul Williams and Jean Louis Trintignant.
